Background
The establishment of the SRO-SSWA in New Delhi comes in the wake of the United Nations Secretary-General's pledge to strengthen the development pillars of the United Nations (namely, economic wealth shared, social gains secured and gifts of the earth protected). It also follows from ESCAP's endeavour to further enhance its assistance to member States with regards to the formulation and implementation of inclusive and sustainable development policies aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
The SRO-SSWA strives to facilitate regional economic cooperation and the sharing of development experiences within the subregion, which is emerging as one of the most dynamic of the world.
It serves 10 countries in the subregion, namely:
Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Bhutan
India
Islamic Republic of Iran
Maldives,
Nepal,
Pakistan
Sri Lanka
Turkey
